Motorized Manual Follicular Unit Excision
Manual Follicular Unit Excision, or FUE, is a major advancement in hair restoration surgery over the previously prevalent strip surgery method (FUT). FUE is the process of extracting individual hair follicles from the patient donor area using a motorized FUE device using various types of punches. This is much less invasive than the FUT surgery and has considerably less discomfort afterwards. FUE requires a steep learning curve to master, patience, physical stamina and endurance, a delicate touch, excellent hand eye coordination, and excellent hand-motor skills. Given these innovations, modern motorized tools have become highly effective, and allow well-trained physicians to harvest large numbers of grafts in increased session sizes.
Pros:
- Larger surgery size than with ARTAS technology
- Less expensive than ARTAS method (mid-range cost)
- Near painless procedure once local anesthesia has been given
- Near scar-less procedure (no linear scar)
- No scalpel, no stitches
Cons:
- Donor area must be shaved for harvest (although smaller areas of harvest may be hidden)
- Slightly more time-consuming hair restoration option
